"American Idol"'s eighth season kicked off to a blazing start in sweltering hot Phoenix, where a colorful cast of characters showed off their talent (or lack thereof), and new judge Kara DioGuardi showed she's not to be taken lightly!
A tattooed rocker (Emily Hughes, 21); a visually impaired inspiration (Scott MacIntyre, 23); a man Kara described as a "sensitive roughneck" (Michael Sarver, 27); and a bikini-clad siren (Katrina Darrell, 20) -- who planted a kiss on host Ryan Seacrest -- were among the contestants to score a golden ticket to the first round of competition in Hollywood.
Not as successful were a Michael Jackson imitator, a man who went by the nickname "sexual chocolate," and a sensitive rocker who cried throughout the day and who Simon Cowell dubbed a "drama queen."
The two days of auditions in Phoenix also gave new panelist Kara the chance to show that she's as outspoken as her fellow judges Simon, Paula Abdul and Randy Thomas.
"Honestly, you don't have the chops to sing that song, sweetie," she told bathing-suit beauty Katrina, who in a twist ended up making the cut.
Catch the second part of "Idol"'s season premiere Wednesday night on Fox as the auditions continue in Kansas City!
