Obama's Inauguration Speech: Solid as Barack?

History may be the judge of Barack Obama's presidency, but we won't have to wait that long to cast either praise or aspersions on his inauguration speech.

While expectations were phenomenally high for the roughly 18-minute speech, the 44th commander in chief—after a slight stumble through his oath, thanks in part to Chief Justice John Roberts' notesless administration of the pledge—did his best to once again bring hope to the country while taking care to underscore his own personal journey that brought him to the Oval Office.

"This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed—why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall, and why a man whose father less than 60 years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath," Obama said.

Barack Obama Assumes Presidency as the World Watches

Barack Obama has been sworn in as the 44th President of the United States, with both U.S. government officials and Hollywood celebs looking on.

During his speech, Obama acknowledged tough times, but struck a positive tone for the future. "Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America - they will be met."
"What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility - a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task," Obama said.

Earlier in the day, outgoing President George W. Bush received the Obamas at the White House to give an official welcoming to their new home. Obama and his wife, Michelle, exchanged handshakes, smiles and kisses with Bush and his wife, Laura.

After posing for a photograph, the foursome went inside to have coffee in the Blue Room with Vice President-elect Joe Biden, and his wife, Jill. In keeping with White House tradition, Bush left a note for Obama in his desk in the Oval Office, wishing him well as he assumes the presidency.

The Bushes and Obamas then made their way to the U.S. Capitol via motorcade to the official swearing-in ceremony.

Among those to be front and center at the inauguration were Oprah Winfrey, John Cusack, Dustin Hoffman, Steven Spielberg, Beyonce & Jay-Z and Muhammad Ali. The legendary "Queen of Soul," Aretha Franklin, belted out a moving rendition of 'My Country Tis of Thee" at the ceremony.

Paula Abdul Fan's Death Ruled a Suicide

The coroner today confirmed the grim news suspected for months: Paula Goodspeed, the American Idol fan found dead outside of Paula Abdul's home, committed suicide.

Goodspeed’s death was ruled a suicide due to "acute multiple prescription drug intoxication"—that is, an overdose of prescription drugs—Los Angeles Coroner spokesman Ed Winter says. The specific types of drugs found in Goodspeed’s body will not be disclosed.

The two-time Idol auditioner was found in her car outside Abdul's L.A.-area estate Nov. 11. An autopsy was completed less than a week later, but the announcement of the cause of death was not, pending the results of the toxicology screening.

Winter says Goodspeed did not leave a suicide note. She did, however, have a history of mental illness, failed suicide attempts and hounding Abdul.

Madonna: That's a Wrap?

Some stars might be embarrassed if unauthorized outtakes of their latest album's artwork got leaked all over the Internet. Somehow we don't picture Madonna in this category of bashful babes.

But has the 50-year-old finally gone too far? Photos of the singer's Hard Candy campaign have emerged, showing her dressed in medical gauze, a disposable thong and boots that look like they were stitched together by some creepy Tim Burton character.

What do you think? Has Madge's bondage style got you scandalized (is that even possible these days?) or in awe that she still owns it? Comment away!

Miley Cyrus Rocks the Capital

She may be two years shy of being able to actually vote, but that didn't stop 16-year-old Miley Cyrus from showing off her political side by way of the Kids Inaugural: We Are the Future concert in Washington, D.C., Monday night.

The teen sensation took to the stage at the Verizon Center to sing for the 14,000-plus in attendance, which included future first lady Michelle Obama and her daughters, Sasha and Malia.

But it wasn't just Miley who wowed the crowd, which included families of men and women of the American Armed Services. Michelle Obama, herself, had her fair share of screaming fans as well when she stepped up to address the audience.
