‘The Bachelor’s’ promised shocker may really be one

ABC has been promising us the most shocking finale ever for this season of “The Bachelor.”

I know. They always say that. But this time it might be true.

The identity of the woman Jason Mesnick proposes to in the Final Rose ceremony has been well known since before the season started.

Determined fans at Internet discussion sites such as Reality Fan Forum analyzed the show’s promotional videos and spotted an identifying piece of jewelry on the hand receiving the engagement ring.

But that’s just the beginning of the spoiler madness. If you’re intent on being surprised by the outcome, read no farther. But if you need to know, read through to the rest of this article.

The not so surprising news: the proposee is Melissa Rycroft.

So why, if Melissa has been spoiled for months and seems like the likely choice for Jason even without that information, would ABC be promoting the “shocking” ending to the season? And why add a second “After the Final Rose” special the day after the first one?

Because – according to two independent reports – Jason dumps Melissa at the “After the Final Rose” reunion and proposes to runner-up Molly Malaney.

The news was broken by the blogger Reality Steve, who claims that Jason’s switcheroo was scripted by the producers. The blog Bachelor News refutes Steve’s conspiracy theory, but confirms the Molly-for-Melissa swap happened.

Further, the Reality Blurred web site reports that a major tabloid will soon report the story.

All that still leaves us quite a ways from genuine confirmation, but given “The Bachelor’s” long history of spoilers and leaks, the Watcher thinks it is quite likely.

ABC, as is standard reality-show policy for all networks, refuses to comment on the reports.

But we’re sure ABC could not be happier. Ratings for the season have been good, but they will be sky high for the March 2 finale and the March 3 re-reunion.

I know I’ll be watching.
