After watching Joaquin Phoenix on Wednesday's Late Show With David Letterman, Ashton Kutcher is wondering if the actor is trying to pull a Punk'd-like prank on people.
Phoenix, 34, sported sunglasses and a heavy beard, spoke in monosyllables and chomped on gum as Letterman heckled him about his new look.
Even though Phoenix has denied hoax rumors, Kutcher says it is "too odd" that Phoenix's brother-in-law, Casey Affleck, happens to be "doing a documentary on him," filming all of his weird antics.
"Is he acting?" Kutcher blogs on his Twitter page, adding that Phoenix's behavior feels "a little strange."
Although Phoenix and Letterman were awkward toward each other on camera, Kutcher says he heard they got along great after the segment taped.
"I find it interesting that at the end of the interview, he takes his glasses off and returns to shake Dave's hand again," Kutcher writes.
Phoenix also has Kutcher's wife Demi Moore scratching her head.
"I can't figure out if it was real or a very in-depth character he has committed to," she blogs on her Twitter page. "Whatever is going on is friggin' funny!"
